‘Back 2 School’ set to help hundreds of students

Event details:

‘Back 2 School’ distribution

Wednesday, August 16th, 7a.m.-7p.m.

La Crosse Center (Arena), 300 Harborview Plaza, La Crosse, WI 54601

LA CROSSE – Hundreds of families will soon have the supplies and clothing their children need for the upcoming school year thanks to an ongoing partnership between two La Crosse organizations.

‘Back 2 School’, a collaborative program by Catholic Charities and The Salvation Army in La Crosse, will hold its ‘Distribution Day’ on August 16th at the La Crosse Center.  Families will be able to stop by at any point from 7a.m.-7p.m. to pick up the school supplies and clothing they signed up for. During the event, 500 students will be given ‘first day of school’ outfits with more than 850 students expected to be sent home with backpacks full of school supplies.

“There is nothing more joyful than watching a child pick out a backpack filled with donated supplies or watching them skip across the floor to receive the outfit donated specifically for them at our event” said Karen Becker of Catholic Charities.  “These outfits and supplies help these children feel like everyone else on that first day of school – ready and excited to be back to school!”

Along with the distribution of school supplies and clothing comes another opportunity for ‘soon-to-be students’.  Free haircuts, sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, will also be available all day long for any students in attendance.

“We were already able to give the students supplies and clothing.  Now, we’re also helping them and their families with a free haircut,” said Nick Ragner of The Salvation Army of La Crosse. “At the end of the day, this program is about making these students and their families’ entire school experience a positive one.  We believe this event will get them excited for the first day of school and will lead to academic and social success moving forward.”

With the program’s distribution quickly approaching, Catholic Charities and The Salvation Army are still in need of donations of both school supplies and clothing.  You can find more information about donating or becoming a sponsor by visiting www.cclse.org or www.SalvationArmyLaCrosse.org.
