‘Back 2 School’ donation collection begins
LA CROSSE – A program hoping to provide families with school supplies and clothing is now accepting public donations.
The ‘Back 2 School’ program is a collaborative effort from The Salvation Army and Catholic Charities in La Crosse. The program provides an unlimited amount of school supplies to students, and up to 500 students with clothing. Public donations are needed to keep up with program demand.
“We are really in need of things that you don’t always think are school supplies,” said Shannon Parker of Catholic Charities. “Things like scientific calculators, ear buds, Kleenex, and flash drives are required in some of today’s classrooms.”
Valley View Mall will once again feature a pencil stand that will display students’ names and other basic information on tags. Shoppers will be able to act as ‘sponsors’ by taking a tag, purchasing clothing, and dropping it back off at the pencil stand. Organizations that would like to sponsor multiple children can do so by contacting The Salvation Army of La Crosse at 608-782-6126.
“We need the community’s support to make this program happen,” said Salvation Army public relations coordinator Nick Ragner. “Something as little as having a brand new pair of shoes for the first day of school can have a large impact on these students’ outlooks on life.”
Through another partnership, school supplies can be purchased and dropped off at donation bins inside La Crosse area Menards and Shopko stores. Donations can also be brought directly to The Salvation Army and Catholic Charities in La Crosse.
Families can still register for the program online by visiting www.cclse.org. The deadline to apply is August 3rd. All school supplies and clothing will be distributed on August 16th at the La Crosse Center.
